Kalandrun takes its name from the Calandra Lark (Melanocorypha calandra), a songbird renowned for its loud, beautiful imitations of other birds. This bird thrives in the wider Petrova Polje area, nesting amidst the vineyards of the Vizzulin estate. The wine Kalandrun embodies the bird’s charm and elegance, as reflected by its esteemed awards, including a bronze medal at the Decanter Awards in 2019.
Kalandrun is crafted from Merlot grapes, which are hand-harvested and carefully selected prior to processing. Fermentation and maceration last up to two weeks in fermenters at cooler temperatures, which greatly enhances the wine’s aromatic depth. After completing both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in controlled conditions, Kalandrun is aged for 12 to 16 months in barrique barrels made of Slavonian, American, and French oak. Through oak maturation, Merlot’s soft, velvety tannins develop a pleasing roundness, contributing to the wine’s balanced harmony. The wine acquires delicate smoky, vanilla, and spice notes from the oak barrels, which elegantly complement its natural fruitiness. Once aged, Kalandrun is bottled and rests for a further six months before release.
Kalandrun displays a deep ruby-red color with a robust, full-bodied elegance and smooth, refined tannins. This wine boasts an exceptionally rich structure and delightful harmony. Its aromas are predominantly fruity, featuring ripe plum and cherry alongside berry notes of raspberry and currant. Kalandrun pairs beautifully with premium fish, game, and all types of meat dishes, especially roast lamb or veal. With its bold yet refined body, this wine is an invitation to celebrate special moments together.
